Democratic politicians in Montgomery County's have been telling us for years that the county's high taxes do not matter because residents are willing to pay them for the public services they get. The County's business development strategy has been to justify high taxes for expensive services in hopes that Washington -area government workers will locate in the county.

In a speech to the Maryland GOP Convention, Chairman Audrey Scott challenged Republicans to go one step further in discussing the dangers of big government. The term itself has become overused and not understood. We must get in the habit of explaining that we cannot grow government without taking away resources from individuals, diminishing individual human beings and stifling their potential.

Great ready for a very hard fought race for Governor. While we are used to thinking of Maryland as one the "bluest of the Blue states," each of the last four gubernatorial elections has been very closely contested. Republican candidates have averaged 48% of the vote, while Democrats have had 51%. In any given election, the maximum "swing" from the party average has been only four percentage points.

Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett this past Monday announced that the county is facing a deficit of $779 million in its $4.3 billion budget. County agencies are facing proposed cuts in services and staffing. Leggett's budget contains an increased energy tax, which combined with a water rate increase of 8.5% approved by the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission, could have county residents paying $90 extra a year.

Many Democratic commentators in advance of last week's Presidential Health Care Summit predicted that the meeting would highlight a lack of Republicans ideas. They assumed the Summit would provide momentum for the stalled Obama health care bill. They must have been sorely disappointed. Instead of facing the caricatured "Party of No," the President and Congressional Democrats engaged Republicans prepared with solid alternative proposals and reasoned critiques of the existing Obama Care proposals.

The public is clearly not being fooled by this debate. According to a CBS/NYT poll only 6% of Americans think that Obama's Stimulus created jobs. That is lower than the 7% who believed Elvis Presley was still alive in another CBS poll. But then Americans are by nature a very optimistic people.

Earlier this week Northrop Grumman announced that it will move their corporate headquarters from Los Angeles to the Washington metropolitan area. Because aerospace giant Lockheed Martin is already headquartered in Bethesda, our state might have a strong claim on snagging the corporate giant.

Because Congressional Democrats are considering dramatically expanding Medicaid, the public health care program for the poor, it is worth looking at how the program is doing in Maryland. Before expecting the government to take on more tasks, we should see how it is doing with its current responsibilities.

Virtually all of the members of the Obama Administration have never faced the uncertainly of meeting a payroll, collecting overdue customer bills or struggling to get business financing. Their job creation experience is limited to government appropriations or grants. The closest they have been to a small business is picking up their dry cleaning.

Out of Touch County Council Obsessed with Social Agenda: Incomes in Montgomery County are stagnant, unemployment is rising, housing prices have declined and property taxes have continued to rise. Yet instead of addressing our financial crisis, our County Council continues to treat their personal politically correct social agenda as the county's most pressing priority. The Council is badly out of touch with the concerns of county residents.

Montgomery County and all of Maryland lost a very dear and stalwart friend on November 3. Up until just 10 days before her death from cancer, Jean Brown Cryor was still actively engaged in her role as a member of the Montgomery County Planning Board. This reality reflects the high level of energy and optimism Jean brought to everything she did.
